After working as Finance Director for a number of internet start-ups, Duncan moved into construction, joining Hong Kong based developers Tyler May where he rapidly rose to become head of international operations. Leaving to focus on his own portfolio, Duncan established himself as one of the shrewdest operators in the UK development arena, selling his business in 2001 for a profit of £11 million. Inspired by the Human Genome Project to return to his first love, biochemistry, he founded Prometha in 2002.
